LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team didn't have much in reserve Friday night, but the Golden Eagles still had plenty of firepower.
With only seven players suited up, Cal State L.A. got another big performance from
Vincent Camper and a powerful double-double from
Christopher Mark and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 85-66, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-5, 5-4 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four games, while handing Cal State Stanislaus (3-13, 2-7 CCAA) its fifth straight loss.
Camper, who has been named the CCAA Player of the Week two times in a row, continued his hot streak with a game-high 26 points. Mark, meanwhile, had a season-high 23 points and go along with a season-high 17 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Demetrius Hazel also reached double figures in scoring with 13 points.
Rick Cardoso had 17 points and seven rebounds to lead three Cal State Stanislaus players in double figures. Heath Colvin also had 17 points and Duane Jones had 13 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 48.5 percent for the game and knocked down 7-of-15 attempts from behind the 3-point arc. The Golden Eagles also enjoyed a 47-32 rebounding edge.
Cal State Stanislaus shot 35.5 percent from the floor.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 48-35 halftime lead and led by double-digit margins the rest of the way. Cal State L.A. led by as many as 25 points in the second half.
All seven Golden Eagles who played contributed in big ways.
Tyler Polo had seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals,
Eric Flournoy had six points, four rebounds and six assists,
Trenod Whitfield-Smith had six points and eight rebounds and
Junior Rodriguez had four points and seven rebounds.
Cal State Stanislaus got a free throw in the opening minute by Scott Behrs to take its only lead of the game. The game was tied at 3-3 before the Golden Eagles scored the next eight points – a tip-in by Rodriguez and six straight points by Mark – to take the lead for good.
The Warriors got the deficit down to 12-9, but the Golden Eagles got a jumper by Smith to take their first double-digit lead, 24-14, with 10:32 left in the period. A 3-pointer by Camper gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the half, 44-25, before a layup by Jones got the Warriors to within 48-25 at halftime.
Cal State Stanislaus cut the lead to 58-47 with 14:31 to go and were still down by just 12, 62-50, after a 3-pointer by Jones with 13:07 remaining.
The Golden Eagles, though, scored the next 11 points to break the game open. Camper made a layup to start the run, Mark got an offensive rebound and basket, Hazel scored on a layup, Flournoy scored on a layup after a steal by Camper, Mark scored on a thundering dunk with an assist from Camper and Mark hit one of two free throws to give Cal State L.A. a 73-50 lead with 8:35 to go.
The Golden Eagles led by at least 20 points until the final minute.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home game against Chico State on Saturday.
